Readers Digest :: 1st Solo Subway Ride

The article's about a parent who came under considerable flack in New York City for letting her 9 yr old take the subway home on his own. Various parents groups lambasted her and likened it to 'child abuse'. while that seems a rather harsh conclusion , I don't think I'd ever put my own children in that predicament , even if they insisted they were ready to do it.

A monthly gig where I do the portrait of the guest columnist. I especially enjoy this gig because of the challenge presented by the diversity of the people I have to draw.
I have some recently completed projects that I'm looking forward to showing , I just need to wait til they're on the stands before I can share them.

Another illo in an ongoing monthly series for the magazine . The main character Seymour Cash has gone through a bit of de-volution at the request of the AD. They wanted him to have a more 'ruffled' demeanor. Had fun designing his tie which will figure in future installments. Viola. Article can be read here.

The following poster was done for a wine tasting festival. A real pleasurable piece to work and a bit of a stylistic departure in that I was trying to really keep it to simple shapes . My intent was to echo the look of of vintage travel posters with a rock poster edge. Enjoy!

Another UK gig for the New Internationalist. Article addressed the notion of eco-travel and the challenges of trying to fly less. The AD wanted this to have a real 'comic book' feel.

Boy's Life Mag :: Jake's Race

These were 2 , two page spreads for Boy's Life Magazine, the official magazine of the Boy Scouts Of America. I believe the publication has been around since 1911. The AD was hoping to run the story text as white type , so I kept the palette pretty dark & textured. The story , was about Jake , going on an early training run and coming across a car accident. Needless to say, he has to go and seek out help. A fun and challenging job. Wish they all could be like this.

Project Omega :: Penguin Books

The book is about a young woman who has to take over her father's company after he mysteriously disappears. The interior illos, done by another artist, reflect a 1940's timeframe. Above is the redesigned cover with my illo. Below the previous version it's replacing . Enjoy!

EMI Music Publishing :: Billboard Magazine

The premise for the ad was a day in the life of a songwriter. The majority of the narrative boxes and dialog balloons contain song titles or lyrics from EMI artists.
This was a substantial undertaking with a relatively quick turnaround. Client was really pleased , and a minimal number of art revisions had to be done, so needless to say, I was pleased too. Should be on newsstands now . Enjoy!

A recent cover for a law magazine. The main article deals with restrictions imposed on Canadians regarding access to American media content on the web. Like movies & television shows on iTunes etc .

'Old Stuff' that suprisingly doesn't suck!

Periodically I skim my old work just to reassure myself that I'm still getting better at this illustration thing. Some of that old stuff is really humbling to look at now .Sometimes though, I'm surprised to come across old pieces that still manage hold up to the test of time. Was really pleased to get this job. This was a special issue of Vanity Fair dedicated to Royalty & timepieces.It's a portrait of the writer of the piece, James Gurney. The article was about exclusive watchmakers who service clients that are primarily of "Royal' status. The brief wanted the writer in a somewhat irreverant posture/context.

Political Infantilism :: The New Internationalist

An illo done for a well crafted article which delves into conspiracy theories , media hype , government spying, and people's willingness to believe anything provided they don't have to think too hard or see all sides to a story.
